Multiplying Decimals TEKS 5.3E 5.3D Close Math Strategy

Product Description
Close Reading Strategies for Math!
If you are looking for ways to get your students to read math closely- these activities can help!

Start with a passage, flyer or graphic. Make sure it does not contain a problem to solve. It is just information. We want students to think about the passage as a whole. Each of these strategies are great for building mathematical thinking while reinforcing reading strategies!

Say, Mean, Matter
This strategy gets students think about different phrases in text. The teacher picks out important pieces for students to focus on. Later, when students are more skilled, they can pick out the important pieces! We start by asking the question, “What does it say?” Then move to, “What does it mean? and finally, “Why does it matter?”
Students can spin the spinner to answer questions about the flyer.

Cube It
Cube It is a strategy used to differentiate thinking. Each side of the cube is a different skill. Students roll the cube and answer the question. A sheet is included if you don’t have time to make the cubes!

Read It Again And Again And Again
Read it Again and Again and Again is a strategy to help students read for a different purpose. Often times, we ask students to read math problems multiple times. They do, but they read the same thing over and over again without looking for different pieces of information.
Musical shares is the activity!

KNWS
What do you need to know, what do you NOT need to know , what do you want to find and what strategy will you use helps students to find critical pieces of information.
3 task cards are included for problem solving

Students will practice multiplying decimals in a fun problem solving way!

Dividing Decimals Model Task Cards

Product Description
Modeling decimal division is a new skill for students. These task cards are basic modeling of a 2 digit decimal divided by a whole number. Students will be able to see a pattern to help them understand and apply what they know about the base 10 system.

This set has 20 cards with models of decimal division. The students will write the equation that matches the card.

Ways to differentiate:
Write a word problem to go with the model.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.6
Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers 5.3G

Model Model Model!  When students are first learning a concepts- concrete is the way to go!

Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers

Modeling and dividing decimals by whole numbers is tricky, but these 3 Sets of Task cards can help! Use them orally in small groups, or individually as a practice station in Math Daily 3 or in Guided Math. Another option is to use one card at a time with the entire class. Students can answer on notebook paper and track the cards they have completed on the included recording sheet. An answer key is also included. In addition Roll For Luck whole class game to play with any of the 3 sets.

Set 1: Students will model division of decimals using an area model. 12 Task Cards with a student modeling sheet can help students visualize and understand division of decimals by a whole number. Answer Key is included!
Set 2: Students will continue to practice dividing 2 digit decimal dividends by 1 digit whole numbers. 24 mini-task cards and griddable answer sheets will help students practice decimal placement. These numbers are small enough fro students to mentally solve the problems.Answer Key is included!
Set 3: Students will practice up to 4 digit decimal dividends by up to 2 digit divisors with quotients to the hundredths using 20 task cards. Two types of answer sheets are available- grids and free response. Answer Key is included!
These task cards sets are perfect for test prep and will work well at Guided Math centers, BUILD, Daily 3 Math stations, for partner work, or with the whole class games. Use them with PLICKERS to assess the class!

These cards will look best in color, but will also print out fine in black and white. Simply print and cut. Laminate and use them again and again. Alternatively, you could print black and white cards on colored cardstock. Keep them in a baggie or whole punch and put on a ring
Includes:
Set 1
12 Modeling Decimal Task Cards, Student Sheet and Answer Key
Set 2
24 Mini Task cards Color and Black & White with Griddable Answer Document
Set 3
20 4 digit decimal dividend by 2 digit divisor with quotient up to hundredths Task Cards- Color and Black and White with Griddable and Open Response Student sheets with Answer Keys
Student bubble sheet

Guided Math Professional Development

Guided Math Professional Development

Guided Math Training is a 3 Day workshop that gets teachers ready to change the way they teach!  We know that teaching in small groups at the level of the student is best practice, but without the systems in place to keep it all together, it doesn't work!

Whole Class Teaching

Session 1

Day 1 is about whole class teaching.  The biggest stumbling block that I have encountered when working with teachers is the whole class teaching time.  When teachers hear the time limits- 15 to 20 minutes- they automatically think this is impossible!  And it is if they teach a normal lesson.  During this session, teachers learn about ways to keep this teaching time meaningful and short!

We will also go through planning using the backwards design model.  We want to start with the end in mind!  For a more detailed description of this planning session click here.

Whole Class Instruction Strategies

Stations

Session 2

Day 2 of the training is all about stations.  We start with the basics of setting up the procedures and routines.  We look at a launch schedule and customize it to fit the campus needs.  Flexible grouping and Accountability and big parts of the day.

Guided Math Stations

Small Group Instruction

Session 3

Day 3 is all about small group instruction.  We discuss ways to keep track of who needs what and documentation for RTI.  Teachers will learn more about intervention strategies and enrichment ideas.

Fact Fluency: Multiplication and Division

Fact Fluency is more than just memorization!  Teachers will learn strategies to teach their students instead of relying on memorization.  When students have a strategies like doubles and half then double, they can begin to build number concept.

Fact Fluency: Addition and Subtraction

Fact Fluency is more than just memorization!  Teachers will learn strategies to teach their students instead of relying on memorization.  When students have a strategies like doubles and doubles plus or minus 1, they can begin to build number concept.
