This unit is about multiplying a whole number by a fraction and a fraction by a whole number. Students represent using area models, strip diagrams, number lines, ratio tables and pictorial models to gain an understanding of multiplication with fractions. Students also learn about dividing a whole number by a unit fraction and a unit fraction by a whole number. Understanding the process of these operations is a focus. Students generalize what is happening with the numerator and denominator to help them understand the concept of the reciprocal (taught in 6th grade). Students also use estimation (compatible numbers) to help them solve problems that aren’t very friendly! They also add multiplication and division of fractions to order of operations.
I have broken down each TEK into Learning Targets to make it easier to track student progress. There are 5 skills in this unit! Each learning target contains intervention and enrichment skills. A student data sheet is included for students to reflect on their own learning for the unit. A teacher tracking sheet is included to make small group instruction easier!
Each day contains objective, learning targets, materials, whole class teaching activity, guided math activity and closure with an exit ticket and answer key for most days.
