Foundations of Number Guided Math Lesson Plans 3.2A, 3.2B, and 3.2D

This unit is about composing and decomposing numbers.  It is important for students to be able to break apart numbers because in the next unit they will be adding and subtraction using place value.

Decomposing and composing numbers requires students to be flexible in their thinking.  Students need to explore the place value system so they understand it.  How many times do we ask students to perform an operation in a problem and they come up with a number that isn't possible.  When asked if the number is reasonable, they have no way to answer. To begin this unit, we ask students to decide whether each statement is true or false.  We don't guide or help.  We just want to know what their level of understanding is for number concepts.

Anticipation Guide for Foundations of Number- Click for a free copy!

When the unit is finished, we do this activity again to see if their thinking has changed. Anticipation Guides are a perfect way to explore what students already know!  When I write them, I try to use the possible misconceptions that students have about a topic.

TEKS: 3.1A, 3.1B, 3.1C, 3.1D, 3.1E, 3.1F, 3.1G, 3.2A, 3.2B, and 3.2D

Foundations of Number. In this unit, students will learn place value through 100,000. They will compose and decompose numbers with concrete objects, pictorial models and expanded form. They will also compare and order numbers using symbols and words. This unit is scheduled for 8 days.

I have broken down each TEK into Learning Targets to make it easier to track student progress. A student data sheet is included for students to reflect on their own learning for the unit.

Each day contains objective, learning targets, materials, whole class teaching activity, guided math activity and closure with an exit ticket and answer key for most days.
Whole Class teaching in this unit contains:
Anticipation Guide (Preview Assessment)
Math Huddle (Math Talk)
Mini Lessons (Connection, Teaching Point, Active Engagement and Link to Ongoing Learning)
Literature Connection

Games in this unit are included:
Race to 100
SNAP Place Value, Compare and Order

Comparing Numbers Task Cards TEKS 2.2D

Comparing and Ordering Numbers: 20 challenging word problem cards with AUDIO! Your student can scan the code to have the problem read to them!

Comparing and ordering numbers is tricky, but these 20 task cards can help! Use them orally in small groups, or individually as a practice station in Math Daily 3 or in Guided Math. Another option is to use one card at a time with the entire class. Students can answer and track the cards they have completed on the included recording sheet. An answer key is also included. In addition, there is a whole class games to play with the cards.

Use these 20 multiple choice task cards to practice comparing and ordering numbers in a graph, by number, categories and reasoning. Cards 17-20 are challenging! A student answer sheet for students to record their answers is included along with QR codes on each card audio. That’s right! The problems can be read to your students! These task cards work well at Guided Math centers, BUILD, Daily 3 Math stations, for partner work, or with the whole class games. Use them with PLICKERS to assess the class!

These cards will look best in color, but will also print out fine in black and white. Simply print and cut along the guidelines. Laminate and use them again and again. Alternatively, you could print black and white cards on cardstock. Keep them in a baggie or whole punch and put on a ring
Includes:
20 Color and Black & White task cards with QR codes for audio!
1 whole class game

Fact Fluency begins with learning doubles, fives, ones and zeros and progressively teaches strategies for learning all of the facts. Students don’t just memorize the facts; they work on strategies for finding an answer to an unknown fact. 6 games are included. These games can be used for any fact strategy group! Best of all- the games can be played with a student’s own cards! One student can be working on perfect squares in the same game as a student working on double doubles! Differentiating a station is key! This helps with scheduling- no need to worry about which fact group kids are in!
