https://johnpohly.wistia.com/medias/a5mbpg4k9n?embedType=async&seo=false&videoFoam=true&videoWidth=640

This unit is about the relationship between area and volume. Students begin by exploring the concept of volume through hands on real world activities. They explore the formula for volume and review the formulas for area and perimeter.  Students will classify and organize geometric shapes based on their attributes. They will explore generalizations for triangles and quadrilaterals through graphic organizers.  Finally students will solve problems based on capacity, weight and length using the metric and customary systems. Students will use conversions to answer questions.

I have broken down each TEK into Learning Targets to make it easier to track student progress. There are 7 skills in this unit! Each learning target contains intervention and enrichment skills. A student data sheet is included for students to reflect on their own learning for the unit. A teacher tracking sheet is included to make small group instruction easier! Each day contains objective, learning targets, materials, whole class teaching activity, guided math activity and closure with an exit ticket and answer key for most days.

Whole Class teaching in this unit contains:

Mini Lessons

  • Connection
  • Teaching Point
  • Active Engagement
  • Link to Ongoing Learning

Games and Engagement Activities in this unit include:

5.6A Math Huddle

Building Blocks: Whole Number Addition and Subtraction

In the early stages, students will strengthen their foundation in whole number addition and subtraction. Encourage the use of concrete objects and visual aids to help them grasp the concept of combining and separating quantities. As they progress, gradually transition to mental strategies, promoting the development of fluency in recalling basic addition and subtraction facts. Incorporate real-life problems to foster critical thinking and application of mathematical skills.

Multiplication Marvels: From Two to Three Digits

The multiplication journey begins with understanding the concept of repeated addition. Progressing towards fluency involves introducing two-digit by two-digit multiplication, where students can apply strategies such as partial products or the area model. Gradually, shift their focus to three-digit by two-digit multiplication, emphasizing the importance of place value. Encourage the use of mental math and various multiplication strategies to enhance speed and accuracy.

Division Discovery: Moving from Two to Four Digits

Students should embark on the division adventure by mastering the basics of two-digit divisors and gradually progressing to more complex problems with four-digit dividends. Place value plays a crucial role in understanding division, so ensure students are comfortable with this concept. Introduce long division as a standard algorithm, providing ample opportunities for practice and application in solving real-world problems.
